Garment Remains
1996
63" x 35" x 14"
Thread, recycled textile waste, constructed by machine stitching

Photo B. Molloy

The piece Garment Remains was influenced by a meeting with Rick Duchin (in photo below right) in 1996, then owner of The Garbage Collection, an Oakland clothing company that recycled textile waste into viable and attractive clothing. I visited Rick’s warehouse and found piles of garbage bags heaped with the remains of fabrics picked up from the dumpsters of mostly outdoor clothing companies-a lot of fleece pieces! It was amazing how much usable fabric was thrown away. I thought it would be challenging to create a piece with remains from The Garbage Collection, sort of a twice recycled effort.
